The College of Nursing shows ambition to be a model of recognized and international excellence, towards dynamic programs of research and creates different approaches to practice. The main goal of the College of Nursing is to prepare nurses and practitioners and scientists to reflect and care for a diverse society, and to address the complexity of health care. The College of Nursing is ranked in the top ten percent of all graduate degree awarding nursing schools and baccalaureate in the nation. The College of Nursing graduates are one of the largest number of baccalaureate prepared Registered Nurses in the state. Currently the average GPA for upperclassmen to the BSN program is a 3.57. The College of Nursing now has 70 faculty members about 700 undergraduate students and 230 graduate students. This includes approximately 48 doctoral students in three departments. The departments in the College of Nursing are: Adult and Elderly Nursing; Health Care Environments and Systems; and Women's, Children's and Family Nursing. The College of Nursing conducts degree programs that are accredited by the Commission of Nursing Education, which issued its recommendation in the Fall of 2002. The College of Nursing is also a member of the Council on Collegiate Education for Nursing of the Southern Regional Board and the American Association of Colleges of Nursing. Graduates here are eligible for the national relevant certification examination of each area of specialization and for certification as nurse practitioners and clinical specialists. Students of the College of Nursing are always actively involved with faculty members' research. This helps students understand and value clinical research. In this college of nursing, undergraduate nursing students are encouraged to be part of the scholars program which allows them to walk in the steps of a nursing faculty researcher. The College of Nursing also helps nursing doctoral students receive mentoring and support to pursuit of their dissertation research. The research facilities in the College of Nursing are state of the art and include four research subject data collection/ examination rooms, a biofeedback area and a two way observation room. A physiology laboratory in this college of nursing allows researchers to process, store and analyze lab samples. The College of Nursing maintains and participates in nursing and interdisciplinary clinics for women, children, adults and the elderly with special emphasis on under served and rural populations. Patients at the College of Nursing include HIV and AIDS patients, acutely ill newborns, pregnant teens, adults with mental illnesses, elderly people with disabilities and sensory impaired children. The main focus of the College of Nursing reaches far beyond it's boundaries of traditional classroom walls. The College of Nursing continues to be recognized as one of the best nursing programs in the Southeast. Baccalaureate graduates of the College of Nursing achieve a passing rate well above 90 percent on licensure exams and produces the largest number of graduate level prepared nurses in the state. You could easily say that 75 percent of the college's baccalaureate alumni pursue graduate education within five years of earning their baccalaureate degrees.
